Playing the noses

May 17, 2009 by Jessica

When my niece Paige was almost 1 year old, we went out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. While we were walking to the parking lot, Elliot was holding her, and she reached up and pinched his nose. As she did that, he said “honk.” She looked at him, smiled, and pinched his nose again. Once again, he said “honk.” She then looked at me, reached over, and pinched my nose. I promptly said “beep.” Next thing you know, she is reaching around and pinching each of our noses, and we are each making a different sound. She was laughing, smiling and “playing the noses.” She made lovely music that night, and every time we saw her after that for quite some time.

Micah has recently started to grab and pinch noses, and once again, Elliot says honk every time he pinches. He smiles, and does it over and over again, just like he pushes the buttons on his toys to see them light up and play music. Micah also loves to pinch my nose to hear it honk, and I will push his nose and say “beep, beep.” We are slowly teaching Micah to “play the noses” – just wait, he is going to be a star! Maybe we can take him on Jay Leno’s “Stupid Baby Tricks” to reveal his musical nose masterpiece.

This post is for you, Mom!

April 24, 2009 by Jessica

My mom called to remind me that she needs her daily blog fix. In an effort to be a good daughter, I rapidly finished up this post I’ve been working on all week. So, here it is . . . I hope you find it worth the wait!

Another crazy week . . . Micah has been struggling with a stuffy nose all week, and I’ve been running around like a mad woman and trying to get some work done. As you already know, we started off the week with our 4 month checkup (see my last post).

On Wednesday, we went to our playgroup. Micah thoroughly enjoyed himself – he talked up a storm, smiled at everyone, played with his friend Emily’s Hop ‘N Pop (a travel activity center), and just had a wonderful time. The pictures don’t lie!

I can’t believe how big he is getting – and so grown up! He is playing like a “big” boy now. He was spinning the dials, and pushing all the buttons, and having so much fun. We got home in the afternoon, and I got some work done while Micah napped. I had a BBYO Adult Board meeting that night, so Elliot was on Daddy duty for bedtime.

On Thursday, I got up early to head to a conference in Baltimore. The plan was to have Micah join me. Needless to say, nothing went as planned. Micah woke up super early (around 5 am) and was HUNGRY. I actually thought that would give us great timing – usually, when he wakes up early, he goes back to sleep for 3 (sometimes 4) hours, which would allow us to get out the door around 9:30 or so. Apparently, Micah had other plans. He would NOT wake up until 10:45. He was sound asleep, and he would not be woken up. I had a work emergency, so I was dealing with that. When Micah finally got up, he was grumpy. I fed him, and finally got him dressed and ready to go . . . and he decided to have a poop explosion (a SUB as we call them). I changed him again, and we headed out the door.

I made it all the way to downtown Baltimore . . . just in time for the lunch rush. We couldn’t find any open garages, and right at that moment, Micah got fussy – he was ready to eat again. Realizing that by the time I found a spot, and fed Micah, and got over to the conference it would be practically over, I threw in the towel on the conference. Instead, I headed a few minutes further north and decided to meet up with my SIL Jen and the girls. We met at Panera for lunch . . . and I promptly discovered I did not have my regular diaper bag with my hooter hider. I had the emergency diaper bag, so I tried to nurse Micah using a receiving blanket as a shield. Micah was more in the mood to play with the blanket and smile at me, but every time I tried to stop nursing him he shrieked. It was a fun experience. Lunch was . . . chaotic . . . to say the least. I was dealing with nursing challenges, and Jen had accidentally forgotten my niece Peyton’s shoes. We spent the whole meal trying to keep her from walking on the ground. With all the craziness, I think we ended up staying at Panera for only 10 or 15 minutes – we couldn’t wait to get out of there and try to regain control of the situation.

After lunch, we headed back to their house. Paige and Peyton were great with him. He laughed, he played with them, and we had a pleasant afternoon. His cousins even gave him a few toys to bring home – with lots of lights, buttons and music! He has been having so much fun playing with all of these toys.

My nieces were adorable (as always). Unfortunately, they tend to fight a lot. Paige, however, takes everything away from her younger sister, Peyton, and tries to push her around. On this particular occasion, Peyton wanted to eat some goldfish they were supposed to be “sharing.” Paige is very good at “sharing” – as long as she doesn’t have to share with Peyton. She will share with me, with Micah . . . with pretty much anyone else, but not Peyton. I didn’t exactly see the whole exchange, but Paige took the goldfish, and somehow Peyton ended up biting Paige’s finger . . . hard. She meant business . . . Peyton dug in and was ferocious and shaking her head with fury while she bit down. She intended to teach Paige a lesson, and was standing up for herself – the poor thing was tired of being pushed around! Tough situation for Jen – Peyton needs to learn not to bite, but she was also trying to stick up for herself because Paige was being a bully. I thought she handled the disciplining/comforting very well – I was impressed!

Then, Peyton decided she wanted to pee on the potty. We took off her pants and diaper, and she sat on the little potty. Paige then decided she wanted the potty and tried to shove Peyton off. We eventually convinced her to use the real toilet, but not before the two girls had a shoving match on the mini potty. Somewhere along the way, Peyton decided to pee on the floor. I think the fact that she is showing interest in the potty is pretty exciting as she is only 18 months old! We headed back upstairs, and it became apparent that the girls were tired. When they went down for their nap, we headed home.

I made it home just in time to meet with another contractor. We are considering putting an addition on the house (crazy, right, since we just renovated the inside). That went well, but Micah had a SUB while the contractor was here, and we had to bathe him and put him to bed while trying to talk costs, look at options, and discuss business. It was a bit chaotic!

My frustration of the week has been that Micah has been waking up hungry early in the morning lately. This morning, he got up at 4:30 again (2nd time this week, and we had one night that he woke up at midnight to eat), so I brought him into bed and fed him. He fell back to sleep right after eating, and he woke up again at 8:30. We got up and dressed, and we decided to try out an exercise class called Stroller Strides. We met our friend Erica there with HER son Micah, and we had a good time. It was a good class – I’m pretty sore! After exercise class, Micah went back to daycare for a few hours – his second “trial” run. I think this visit went better – they did not over-feed him, and he did take a bit of a nap. Unfortunately, we did have another meltdown at bedtime, so perhaps they are connected. I wish I knew what to do! In the meantime, I gave him a bottle of pumped breastmilk, and he guzzled it down before he passed out.

This weekend, we are thinking of trying rice cereal for the first time (since breastmilk alone doesn’t seem to be quite enough for Micah these days) . . . it should be interesting (and I promise, there WILL be video). My question is – will he end up with more cereal in his mouth or his hair? I’m a bit scared. I keep seeing him stick his hands in the cereal and putting them straight in that luscious hair of his. I then imagine the cereal getting all hard and sort of . . . shellacking to his hair. We may end up needing to give him a buzz cut before the weekend is over. My mom suggested a shower cap – we may need to experiment!

Can I have my ear back?

April 10, 2009 by Jessica

It is Passover . . . a lovely holiday that has those of us who are observing eating cardboard for 8 days. Okay, not exactly. Passover commemorates our freedom from slavery in Egypt . . . the story of Moses (queue The Ten Commandments). We have seders, a special ceremonial dinner, the first two nights of Passover, to retell the story of Passover and celebrate our current lives of freedom. We then continue to eat matzah and do not eat any bread/grains for 8 days to remind us that our ancestors fled Egypt in such a hurry that they did not have sufficient time to let their bread rise.

The first night, my parents hosted seder at their house. Jeremy and Jen and my two nieces all came down, and it was a good event. We grew up with a family who lives around the corner from my parents. My brother and their oldest daughter Rayna were best friends, and we always refer to Rayna and Stuart as our brother and sister. They were back in town this week for Passover, so as is our tradition, they came over to spend time at my parents’ house before the seders began. My oldest niece Paige was a bit unsure of Stuart . . . which is amazing, because he is so sweet and gentle that EVERYONE loves him! Early on during their visit, he “took” her nose and her ear. She mostly avoided him the rest of the visit, and cautiously watched him from afar. Just as Stu was getting ready to leave, she said “Excuse me, can I have my ear back?” He laughed for a second and then got very serious. He carefully took her ear out and put it back for her. He asked if that was okay, and she responded with “and my nose.” He promptly returned her nose, she flashed him a smile, and walked away. Aren’t 2 1/2 year olds wonderful?

During their visit, my younger niece Peyton was still napping. We decided that we would head over to their house to visit and show off the babies to their Grandma Della once Peyton woke up. At 5:00, we headed over there for a visit. It was so much fun to introduce the next generation of our family to Della. We had a nice visit before returning for our seder. When we were growing up, our families always did a seder together, so this holiday is filled with so many collective memories for us.

Another milestone: Micah can push buttons on toys! He was downstairs on the floor with my two nieces, and they kept bringing him toys and showing him how to work them. He had a piano and another toy that played music when you pushed a button, and he kept pushing the buttons and keys over and over again. I can’t believe he is ready for new toys!!

We hosted the second seder at our house. Elliot’s parents, his brother Steven and his wife Jodi, and two of their chidlren (Brian and Stephanie) joined us, along with my parents. We had a lovely dinner, and Micah got to spend time with his grandparents and cousins. It was a very pleasant evening, and the food was wonderful (if I do say so myself). Elliot made turkey and meatloaf and chicken soup, my mom made brisket and kosher for passover mandel bread (Jewish biscotti) and I made the side dishes and dessert (matzah balls for the soup, matzah farfel, which is the Passover version of stuffing, asparagus, a spinach souffle, a broccoli souffle, kosher for passover brownies and cake – it is amazing how ground up matzah and eggs can actually taste pretty good!). I decorated the cake for my in-laws birthdays. We did have one disaster – the apple charlotte . . . basically, it is made from apples, raisins, crumbled matzah, and eggs, and it is kind of like an apple crisp. It is one of my favorite dishes. It came out perfectly, and I had it cooling on the range. Elliot wasn’t paying attention, and when he turned the burner on to heat up the soup, he turned on the wrong burner . . . and kind of set fire to the apple charlotte. He was still hoping to save it and just cut out the burnt parts (yeah, right). My dad, in an effort to help, tried to move the dish from the range top to the granite countertop to get it out of the way while we were cooking. It was so hot that the minute it touched the cold granite, the glass pyrex dish EXPLODED!! Needless to say, we had to throw it away.

I’m now sitting in bed, my niece and nephew asleep downstairs, Elliot watching tv, and I’m typing this and watching Micah on the monitor. I received an email from a friend of mine who is expecting a baby soon saying she got the same monitor and has been playing around with it. They are looking forward to plugging it in to their tv in their bedroom at night. It is funny, because we were going to set it up and plug it in for everyone to watch tonight . . . and then we got distracted. In fact, I don’t think we’ve ever plugged it in to the tv yet. I think we are going to try and plug it in soon and see if we can record some footage of Micah in bed – I’ll try and post it when we do that. He is currently sleeping across the width of the crib (or at 90 degrees, as we like to say). He keeps almost rolling over in bed, but he does not fully make it over to his tummy – mostly because he keeps trying to roll “uphill” since he is sleeping the wrong way in his crib. He loves to get so close to the bumpers when he sleeps – I should be more worried about how close his face gets to the material, but I guess I feel like I survived on my tummy and with blankets in the crib, he should be just fine.

In the morning, Elliot’s other brother Daniel, his wife Jody, and their son Ethan, are driving down, and the whole family will get together. We are going to try and see some of the cherry blossoms before they leave (weather permitting). I’m making breakfast for everyone in the morning, and it should be a nice day together. My friend Tammy is coming tomorrow night, and I’m hoping the rain will disappear so we can go see the cherry blossoms together. It should be a wonderful weekend.

Wish me luck!

October 12, 2008 by Jessica

I’m a bit nervous. . . . since I started taking this 2nd medicine on Thursday afternoon, well, I’ve felt pretty good. I hardly have any pain/discomfort connected to my fibroid right now, I’m tolerating the side effects of the medication well, and the contractions are few and far between. I was able to resume “normal” activities today . . . I babysat my nieces (okay, I made Elliot do all the work, chasing and lifting) but we went to play at Niki and Eric’s house, and we ate dinner, and then we put them to bed. After we finished babysitting, we stopped off at Ken and Erica’s housewarming party, and finally got home. I’m tired, but feeling great. Tomorrow, my mom and I are going to run to a jewelry show we’ve been wanting to attend, and I’m hoping I feel well enough for that.

I will be taking my last dose of this wonderful medication at 11:00 am tomorrow, and the medicine is due to wear off around 5:00 pm. I’m just worried that the pain and contractions will return, and that we’ll end up back in the hospital. Let’s hope the medicine did more than mask the problem and actually did some healing the past few days. We are supposed to attend Bill’s birthday party tomorrow night – I hope we make it!

The best phone call!

October 1, 2008 by Jessica

Tonight, my 2 year old niece, Paige, decided to give me a call, just to talk! Okay, she had help . . . apparently, she asked my brother all evening if she could call “Aunt Jess.” I can’t stop grinning – she said hi to me when I answered the phone, and we talked about how she went to school today, and that she was going to be taking a bath. It is so cool to be able to speak to her on the phone now! I can’t believe what a big girl she is becoming!

More Crazy Days!

June 11, 2008 by Jessica

Sunday we went running around and visiting my grandmother. My mom brought my nieces over, and we spent the afternoon at the pool! They were just so cute – we had these little floaters for them to sit in, and they just smiled and splashed.

Monday I was caught up all day with meetings and work, and Tuesday I had more meetings, then went to spend the afternoon with the girls. Another exhausting day, and I came home around 10 and crashed almost immediately.

Today has been pretty quiet – just trying to get my work done. Friday is our 12 week ultrasound, and I’m so excited for that! If everything is good on Friday, we are finally going to make this pregnancy public!

Breast Cancer Walk

June 7, 2008 by Jessica

This morning, we woke up early to do a 5k for breast cancer. My friend Eric’s sister died of breast cancer 4 years ago, so each year we do this walk in her honor. I believe we raised $5000 for the team – I raised about $250 in donations, and baked and decorated cookies to put out at Niki’s office that brought in another $200-$300. We actually decorated the cookies the night I found out I was pregnant (April 25).

I was worried about doing the walk – the weather was hot, I’ve been getting easily tired and hungry, and I haven’t been able to do much walking/exercising since I tore a ligament in my ankle back in November. Luckily, my friend Niki is also pregnant, so we did the 5k nice and slow. I made it! I think my ankle is finally doing a little better. Elliot was a huge help . . . he served as my “pack mule” for the day – carrying water and snacks all day for me, and pushing the stroller with Niki & Eric’s son.

After the walk, I went and picked up one of my nieces to head out for a play date at Niki and Eric’s house. We had a fantastic time. Paige discovered she loves to eat watermelon – and make a huge mess. It is so cute to finally watch her interacting and playing with others.

Elliot & I were supposed to meet our friends Heather and Brad for an outdoor movie tonight. We were so tired, we didn’t know if we would make it there. Luckily, the weather intervened, and it POURED rain, so the movie was canceled! Heather & Brad came over to watch a rental movie instead, and we never had to leave the couch! Perfect end to a wonderful day.

Mother’s Day

May 11, 2008 by Jessica

Today was my first Mother’s Day that I could kind of join in the celebration, too! It was so amazing to think this time next year I will be a mother. We all went over to my parents’ house (me, Elliot, Jeremy, Jen, and my two nieces). Elliot & I cooked brunch for everyone. We made omelettes, waffles, home fries – it was a fantastic meal. We also decided to share our good news with Jeremy and Jen.

This time, I decided to take a different approach from the cake. I bought a shirt for my dog (and I never put clothing on my dog!), and put the words “BIG SIS” on the back of it. I slipped it on the dog while we were making breakfast, then went into the other room where everyone was sitting with her. Jen, saw it first, and totally got it right away. Apparently, my brother was being dense . . . Jen had to explain the shirt to him! They were thrilled for us. I felt badly, because I had just seen Jen on Wednesday, and had kind of misled her about our efforts to get pregnant. Elliot had threatened me if I shared the news when he wasn’t there. Luckily, she forgave me!

The rest of the day was fantastic – we took my nieces to the park and they road the carousel and took a train ride. All in all, it was a perfect day.
